Project Description
Catalyst Biosciences wanted to create an activity book for children living with epilepsy and their siblings — something that would provide genuine support and encouragement to a patient community that often feels isolated, while also being engaging and fun enough for a child to actually use.
The goal was not clinical. It was to help children feel that their experience is valid, that they are not alone, and that living with epilepsy does not define what they are capable of.
Our Solution
Kryski Biomedia developed original character designs and line illustrations throughout the book, depicting elements specific to the lived experience of a child with epilepsy — helmets, wheelchairs, service dogs, and a diverse cast of children across ethnicities. The illustrations were designed to work at two levels: detailed enough to hold a child’s interest, simple enough to colour in. Page layouts were designed to keep children moving through the book and engaged with each activity.
Results
The book was received positively by families and healthcare providers. It has been used as a psychosocial resource to help children with epilepsy feel recognised and less alone.
