3D Illustration for Biotech Website: PAM Diversity
Industry: Biotechnology
Client type: Biotech company
Purpose: Website — investor and scientific audience communication
Deliverables: Atmospheric 3D conceptual illustration
Year: 2023
Project Description
A biotechnology company working in gene editing needed a 3D illustration representing the breadth and diversity of their Protospacer Adjacent Motif (PAM) library, a key technical differentiator in their CRISPR-based platform relative to competing approaches, for display on their company website.
PAM sequences are short DNA sequences adjacent to the target site that CRISPR-Cas systems require for recognition and cutting. The range of PAM sequences a given CRISPR system can recognise determines its targeting flexibility. A broader PAM diversity means the system can access more of the genome, which is a significant competitive and scientific advantage for a gene editing platform. Communicating that advantage visually, to an audience of investors, researchers, and potential partners who may range from highly technical to non-specialist, required an illustration that conveyed complexity and scale without becoming a literal diagram.
The brief was to create something that felt simultaneously scientific and visually distinctive: an image that would stop a visitor on a website, communicate expertise and breadth, and align with the company’s brand identity.
Our Solution
Kryski Biomedia produced an atmospheric, conceptual 3D illustration rendering the PAM diversity as an evocative visual system rather than a literal schematic. The illustration captured the complexity and variety of PAM sequences in a form that read as scientifically grounded while having the visual quality of a considered piece of science communication design.
The piece was developed in Cinema 4D and refined in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop to align with the company’s established visual identity. Colours, tone, and style were matched to ensure the illustration felt native to the website rather than generic stock imagery.
The composition was designed specifically for web use: strong focal point, clear visual hierarchy, and sufficient detail to reward a closer look without overwhelming at first glance.
Why scientific visualisation for biotech websites requires specialist knowledge
A conceptual scientific illustration for a biotech website is a different challenge from a technical diagram. It needs to work as communication design (compelling, distinctive, brand-appropriate) while remaining scientifically defensible to a specialist audience that will scrutinise it.
A general graphic designer can produce something that looks impressive. A medical illustrator with graduate-level scientific training can produce something that looks impressive and is accurate. For a company whose credibility rests on the precision of its science, that distinction matters.
Kryski Biomedia brings both capabilities to every biotech visualization project. Every piece is developed with scientific rigour and visual quality held to the same standard.
