Project Description
A biotechnology company developing a treatment for Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI) needed a patient-facing whiteboard video explaining both the condition and their therapeutic approach to patients and caregivers.
Osteogenesis Imperfecta is a rare genetic connective tissue disorder caused primarily by mutations in the COL1A1 or COL1A2 genes, which encode the collagen type I protein chains essential for bone strength and structure. The result is bones that are fragile and prone to fracture, sometimes from minimal trauma. OI ranges in severity from mild forms with occasional fractures to severe forms involving significant skeletal deformity, short stature, and reduced mobility.
The audience was patients and caregivers who may have little to no scientific background. They needed to understand what OI is, why bones are affected, and how the therapy works, without the explanation becoming either condescending or inaccessibly technical. The whiteboard format was chosen specifically because its hand-drawn, step-by-step visual style is well-suited to guiding a lay audience through complex information at a comfortable pace.
Our Solution
Working from the client’s approved script, Kryski Biomedia storyboarded and produced a hand-drawn whiteboard video with integrated animation elements. The production used a combination of authentic hand-drawn illustration and digital compositing to achieve the whiteboard look while maintaining the pacing and visual polish appropriate for a professional patient education context.
The content was structured to follow a clear narrative arc: what is normal bone, what goes wrong in OI at the molecular level, what that means for the patient, and how the therapy addresses the underlying cause. Each concept was held on screen long enough to land before the next was introduced.
Narration and visuals were developed to work together. Each illustrated element appearing in sync with the point being made rather than running ahead or behind the script. The animation was reviewed for scientific accuracy at storyboard stage and refined through collaborative review with the client team before final production.
Why whiteboard video works for rare disease patient education
Rare disease patients and their families often come to a diagnosis with limited prior knowledge of the underlying biology and a significant emotional weight. The whiteboard format, which is unhurried, hand-drawn, building visually one step at a time, is a particularly effective medium for this audience. It does not feel clinical or institutional. It feels like someone explaining something carefully to you.
